Ross Newitt - Leading Seaman (Asdic)
Ross Newitt was born Windsor, Ontario on Dec. 15, 1919. He became involved
in sports at an early age - in baseball, football and basketball. Ross
joined the Navy in Oct. 1940 and served in 3 corvettes: Barrie (K138),
Collingwood (K180), Giffard (K402) and the frigate H.M.C.S. Nene. Returning
from the Mediterranean in March 1943, he met Marion Gemmill, a Scottish
lass, at the Paisley ice rink and they were married, September 15, 1943.
Ross was discharged from the navy in October 1945 at Windsor, Ontario.
Ross and Marion have two sons, Gary (Toronto policeman) born in Scotland
and Erle (TTC subway driver) born in Windsor. They have five grandchildren:
Dayna, Cameron, Brock, Emma and Clayton. Ross worked at Canadian Auto
Trim in Windsor. They moved to Ajax to a new plant, later taken over by
Chrysler. He retired in March 1975. Ross was a founding member of the
Windsor & District Basketball Association from 1946-57. He refereed
with the Durham Region association until 1987 (40 years and 5,000 games
later). Ross has served as a baseball scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates
in the early 60s. Ross and Marion currently reside in Ajax, Ontario.
