Norman
Cummings - Stoker 1st Class
Norman Cummings was born on March 29, 1923 at Niagara Falls, Ontario.
He attended public schools there and the Niagara Falls High School. He
was called for service with the Army Militia unit at seventeen years of
age, the unit being disbanded after a year. Norman worked as a metal worker
at Fleet Aircraft Company until he joined the navy at HMCS Hamilton, as
a Stoker 1, in November, 1942. He was discharged from the service as an
ERA 4 November, 1945. Norman married Eileen Dobbin November 7, 1942. They
have a son Patrick and daughter Diane. Norman and a partner did industrial
metal work (dust and fume collector systems) for 28 years. He formed the
Cummings Heating Service with his wife eighteen years ago, providing gas
service, heating and cooling. Norman retired in 1990 due to health problems.
He is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #51. His hobbies included
a little golf and he belonged to the St. Kitts Flying Club. He and Eileen
had a 26 foot cabin cruiser which they enjoyed. Although Norman's activities
are now somewhat limited, he and Eileen enjoy their retirement and hearing
about the Nene crew.
