BEATON, Thomas A. - 57, New Waterford With peaceful sadness, the family of Tommy Beaton announce his passing at home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, following a courageous five-year struggle with ALS. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Daniel and Lucy (Cormier) Beaton. Tommy spent the early years of his life with the Canadian Navy and later with CN Railway, Halifax. Upon returning home, he worked at Lingan mine then spent the next 27 years with the Devco Railway as a train man/engineer. "A job he truly loved." Tommy was an avid sports fan, "He loved the Leafs." Tom played hockey in the Commercial League and the Colliery League, Glace Bay. He loved a game of golf with the guys as well as a good game of darts. Other games Tommy excelled in were Trivial Pursuit and poker. But mostly, Tommy will be remembered for his caring, dignified and compassionate manner. Tommy is survived by his loving wife, the former Margaret 'Bubba' Kearney; his girls, Danielle, Edmonton, Jennifer, at home; brother, Gary (Faye), Halifax; and his mother-in-law, Greta Kearney. Also surviving are brothers-inlaw, Wayne (Alvina), Keith Kearney, best friend and brother-in-law, Sid (Alana) Oliver; his beautiful nieces, Janice, Christine, Julie Beaton, Kim, Allana, Raylene Kearney, Kristen Oliver; and his favourite nephew, Sid Oliver. Tommy was predeceased by a sister, Sylvia. A private family visitation has taken place followed by cremation. The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the Parish of St. Leonard/St. Michael's Church, River Ryan, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Following the mass, all are invited to join the family for a reception in the Gaul Centre. Interment will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery in the springtime. As an expression of sympathy for Tommy, donations in his memory may be made to the ALS Society or Palliative Care.
