In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
ATKINS, Terrence John (Terry) - of Lower Sackville. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry at age 78. He passed away peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre, November 27, 2020. Terry was born in Hitchin, England December 10, 1941 during the bombings of London, England. Surviving are his sons, James Atkins (Angie) of Moncton, N.B. and David Atkins (Julie), Halifax, and friend, Julia Atkins; granddaughters, Misty, Victoria and Hayley. Also surviving are niece, Linda and nephews, Peter and Stephen, along with many grandnephews and niece, all of Hamilton, Ont. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Lily Atkins and sisters, Anne and Theresa. At an early age Terry immigrated to Canada with his mother following the death of his father. They reunited with sisters, Anne and Theresa (war brides) who resided in Canada and the United States after the Second World War. Terry joined the RCN at an early age of 17 and served five years in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was then employed with the Halifax Fire Department during the amalgamation of Halifax and surrounding areas in the late 1960's. After 30 years of service with the HFD, Terry decided to retire. However this was not the end of his working career as he was then employed with Commissionaires Nova Scotia for 14 years. Terry loved baseball and had a real passion for this sport which was passed on to his sons. The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of floors 5.1 and 4.1 of ICU- QEII Hospital for their constant care and compassion during Terry's final weeks. The body has been entrusted to Dartmouth Funeral Home and cremation has taken place. Because of COVID-19 there will be no visitation and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Terry's memory may be made, with thanks, to the QEII Health Science Centre Foundation or Nova Scotia SPCA.
