DURING, Raymond Lewis - of Lower Sackville, age 74, born in Halifax, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on December 29, 2020. Ray was predeceased by his loving wife, Judy; and by both his parents, Rita and Vincent During; and brother, Joseph in infancy. He is survived by his sons, who he was very proud of, Raymond (Kristi) and Ron; his brothers, Andrew (Patricia), Frank (Janet), Gordon, Patrick (Velda) and Tim; and his sister, Wendy; his grandchildren, who he loved dearly, Cody, Jena, Maggie, and Hayden; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Ray was a devoted Catholic and lived his life guided by his faith. Ray spent his career as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 35 years and prided himself on his dedication to the military retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. One of Ray's favorite pastimes was telling old military stories with friends and family. He also spent a great deal of time building and woodworking, there was no project too big. During his retirement he became very involved in the community, volunteering at Beacon House, St. John Vianney Church and with the Knights of Columbus. He was a very compassionate caring loving soul and went out of his way to help people in need, not just locally but globally as well. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Ray will be cremated and then buried at sea at a later date. A Catholic Mass will be held in St. John Vianney Church, 4 Beaverbank Rd., Lower Sackville, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 11 a.m., Father Yves Marchildon officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in his name may be made to a charity of your choice. Due to COVID-19 there will be a limited number of seats in the church, however the mass will be live streamed and the link will be available on the funeral home website on Monday.
