BUTTERFIELD, Gordon Joseph - passed away peacefully in Nanaimo Palliative care after having battled many years with heart disease and kidney failure. He traveled into the arms of his wee Scottish love and wife Carol. "Grandpa Gord" as he was known by family, was the keeper of the Butterfield stories and happily dispensed them at every visit. For much of his life, Gordon was a Navy man and displayed great pride and devotion to the military, first as a cadet, and later as an educator. He received many commendations and later his love for the sea led him to King Brothers Customs Brokers and Shipping Agents where he made friends all over the world and retired as a Marine Operations Manager. In his last year before retirement, Gordon met his rescuer and love of his life Carol Clarke, in-fact she found him on the internet, as she lived in England. Dad knew Carol from his work at Dockyard so many years earlier. They courted over emails, and met in England where they lived together for a blissful year. Together they decided to settle in Canada and were married on Nov 23, 2009 and rented a cottage to start looking for their perfect home. Soon after their marriage Carol passed away and dad was lost. With the help of family, Grandpa Gord anchored himself and found comfort in stories of his life as a boy in McCreary Manitoba, in the Navy, as a father and grandfather and as a friend to so many. Gordon worked so very hard to make life better for others on both sea and land and we know he is smiling now with his wee angel Carol by his side. Grandpa Gord leaves behind 5 brothers David, Ken (Kathy), Don (Colleen), Kelly (Beryl) and Tim and their families, his first wife Norma, daughter Lisa (Kevin) and son Paul and his grandchildren, Zachary, Daryl, Madison (Evan), Kyle (Calsi) and Jordan (Annie) and his great-grandchildren Blake, Alice, Audrey, Tennessee and Gia and so many friends at King Brothers and around the world. Many thanks to the dialysis team and friends found at Duncan Dialysis center and the many doctors, nurses and care workers dad met over the last 10 years in his home in Ladysmith and in your care. A remembrance will be planned when family can meet safely and in-person. (Victoria Times Colonist 09 Apr 2021)
