In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar

Frederick Charles Salter

Leading Seaman, Clearance Diver, RCN

Born: 03 Mar 1939, Timmons, Ontario

Died: 09 July 2021, Victoria, British Columbia

SALTER, Frederick Charles - passed away peacefully Friday, 9 July 2021, at RJH Victoria, BC after several long and courageous battles with illness. He said the delay with meeting the Maker was because neither the good Lord nor the Devil wanted to take ownership!

Fred was born in Timmons ON, 3 March 1939. His family made their way to Cloverdale, BC owning a farm. Being a strapping, strong farm lad, it wasn't a surprise the RCN recruited him in 1958. Fred served in the military being a cook and clearance diver; his strong ties to Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific) and the "Freddy Salter Memorial Award" are well known to this day. Fred was proud of his Navy roots and in 1968 with "unification", the amalgamation of all three uniforms, Fred called it quits. Keeping his love of the sea alive, Fred went to work on the tugs with Seaspan and yet he kept his hand in cooking for the troops at Bay Street Armoury, most notably his unit 5th Fd Bty (RCA). Fred became ill with Bell's Palsy in 1991 and so, with retirement upon him, Fred honed a healthy appreciation for the finer things in life such as: Elements Casino, the Apple Tree Restaurant, the Royal Canadian Mint and of course, a Navy staple, rum - Kraken, to be exact!

Fred is predeceased by his wife Marleen, daughter Yvonne (Ed) and first wife Dianna. He is survived by his children, Debbie (deceased Ken), Marge (Don), Jim (Terri), Julie (John), Wilf (Pam) and Keith (Cammie). Given the long list, it is no wonder he had the good fortune to be called Poppa or Grampa by a stampeding herd of grand and great-grandchildren. Fred also leaves behind his life long best friend Bob (Terry). There were also many friends and neighbours that held a special place in his heart.

For you - Dad/Pappy, we send a "general salute" on your final sail past.

A Celebration of Life will be held for immediate family and the Divers of FDU(P) at a later date.
