Died: 19Dec 2011, Merrickville, Ontario

 

BONNEAU, John - CD, BA. Bsc. MA (Psy) B.P.+E. Past President Cdn. Legion Br. 95. John was born in Gravelbourg, Sask. March 12, 1925 to Sam and Delisca Bonneau. Passed away peacefully at home (Merrickville, Ont.) December 19, 2011. Joined RCN Volunteer Reserves after serving with South Saskatchewan Regiment since December 1942. While in the RCNVR he served as a communicator and coder until Sept 1945. Following release from the Navy, he worked for the Star Publication in Sask. As managing editor. He was also reporter and stringer for the Regina Leader Post and Moose Jaw Times Herald. He resumed studies in 1948 at the University of Ottawa. He worked at the Saskatchewan Training School in Weyborn Sask. As a psychologist and lecturer to psychiatric nurses in training from 1952 to Sept 1954. He re-enlisted in RCN Sept 1954. He was Senior Information Officer in different areas. He was seconded to External Affairs as Press and Accreditations Officer for the 1961 Ottawa visit by U.S. President John F. Kennedy, again in 1964 for the Royal visit, again in 1965 for the State visit of the Shah of Iran. John Resigned his commission in 1973 and Joined Federal Department of Transport. In 1975 he was promoted to Director of Public Affairs. Retired in 1986 so he could enjoy riding his tractor for hours. He also enjoyed his 10 years as Service Officer of Branch 95. Thanks to the caring and professional help of St. Elizabeth's (Roxanne and Mary Lou) he was able to remain at home. Survived by brother Paul of Moose Jaw, Sask., wife Patricia and her children Amy (Rod), Michael (Millie) and three great grandchildren. As per John's Request, their will be no visitation or Service. A burial at sea is to take place. Donations in memory of John to the Ottawa Cancer Clinic or the Poppy Fund Br. 95, Smiths Falls would be appreciated. (Ottawa Citizen 24 Dec 2011)
