SUTTON, Kenneth Roger, Paym/Lt, O-71320, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Victor Ransom F. and Helen Isabel Sutton; husband of Mary Priscilla Sutton, all of Edmonton, AB.

 

Paymaster Lieutenant Sutton died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.

 

Lieutenant Kenneth Roger "Scotty" Sutton, age 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Sutton, 10246 Wadhurst Road. Scotty a prominent Edmonton athlete is reported missing according to word received by his parents from Royal Canadian Naval Headquarters. His elder brother, Flight Lieutenant Harold Sutton D.F.C. was reported missing in air operations oversea last July. He came to Edmonton with his parents from Fort William. Lieutenant Sutton attended Garneau high school and was active in school sports, including rugby, hockey and baseball. He was a member of the Glenora skating and tennis club and played hockey in the Edmonton junior league with the South Side in 1937-38. His brother also was a prominent athlete. His eldest Robert is serving with the R.C.A.F. Lieutenant Sutton enlisted with the Navy in Edmonton about three years ago and before being posted to a ship he served at Halifax and Newfoundland. His wife and young son live in Edmonton. He has five sisters, three of them married to members of the armed forces.

 

Ken's brother, Harold Ransom Sutton, DFC, was killed on 27 May 1943. He died when his aircraft was shot down over Germany.
