WHITNEY, Kenneth Jack (Ken) - age 83, of Head of Jeddore, passed away on February 27, 2016 at home. Born in Hillier, Ont., he was a son of the late John “Jack” and Hazel Muriel (Rodgers) Whitney. Many words come to mind when we think of Ken: master, sensei, teacher, pioneer, builder, storyteller, beloved...Ken was the foundation and builder of Judo Nova Scotia and a member of the Order of Canada. Many would agree. He is the icon for Judo in the Maritimes. Ken has an endless list of accomplishments and accolades which include solely and in part; NS Hall of Fame in Judo, 6th Degree Black Belt in Judo, the Military Sports Hall of Fame for Judo & Football, Military Clearance Diver and Bomb Disposal Expert, NS Sports Hall of Fame (Football) and a Lifetime Member of Judo Canada & Judo Nova Scotia. Ken and his wife Heather devoted their entire lives to the betterment of their community and were beloved by all who knew them. Ken represented the ultimate in kindness, respect, honor, courage, passion, humility, dedication and bravery. He taught us how to push past the seeming limits of our mind and body. And he cared for every one like his own family with the biggest generosity of heart. We have all lost a Hero. We bow our heads and say, Arigato Gozaimasu, Sensei Whitney. Ken is survived by his daughter Tracey ( Art) Almeida, Orangeville, Ont.; sons, Geordie (Joan), Mississauga, Ont., Kevin (Jean), Victoria, BC., Patrick, Head of Jeddore; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and 2 nieces.
