Hugh Barton Young

Lieutenant, RCNVR

Born: 19 Oct 1919, Toronto, Ontario

Died: 10 Apr 2014, Vancouver, British Columbia

YOUNG, Hugh Barton - Hugh died peacefully in Vancouver on April 10th. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris. He will be greatly missed by his children: Hugh (Barbara) of Chevy Chase, MD, Peter (Charlotte, deceased) of Osoyoos, BC, and Karen (Piet Nooij); and by his grandchildren: Ian, Gabriela (Matthew), and Aidan. Hugh was born in Toronto in 1919, and attended University Toronto Schools (UTS) and the University of Toronto, graduating in commerce in 1942. He married his childhood sweetheart, Doris Jean Torrance, in 1943: they were married at 2:00 p.m., Doris graduated at 4:00 p.m., and they departed for Halifax the next day. He began active naval service in 1942, spending most of his time engaged in convoy duty on the North Atlantic Triangle, and achieved the rank of lieutenant on his discharge in 1946. Hugh moved to Vancouver in 1948 as office manager in the Weston's empire, followed by Doris and their nine-month year old son in 1949. Over the years he held various positions as office manager, comptroller, and financial officer in wholesale lumber. He tried to retire in 1983, but worked part-time until 1989. He was an avid sportsman, participating in cross-country, basketball, and baseball during his high school, university, and navy years. In Vancouver, he attended many a game: the Canucks; Lions and Seahawks; and Capilanos, Mounties, and Canadians. Hugh loved to make people laugh. He was proud of his family bible and spent many hours researching 'The Young', although modern technology got the best of him. There will be no formal service but a get-together to celebrate his life in May. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the B. C. Cancer Foundation, the Children's Hospital Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Variety Club. (The Globe and Mail 23 Apr 2014)
