In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar

Gordon Douglas Saunders

Lieutenant-Commander, RCN(R)

Born: 22 Nov 1921, Riverview, (Winnipeg) Manitoba

Died: 15 Dec 2021, Winnipeg, Manitoba

SAUNDERS, Gordon Douglas - passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Wednesday December 15, 2021, at the age of 100.

Dad was born on November 22, 1921, at home in Riverview to his mother Rubena and father Charles. Gordon married June Harriet Chamberg on September 12, 1945, following his Naval war service. June passed away January 19, 2021, after having celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

Gordon leaves his three children, David, Bruce (Yuen), Shelley (Ken); seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dad served as a signaller on naval corvettes and made many Atlantic convoy crossings while protecting ships resupplying the UK. He had a sharp memory and was able to spin many yarns about encounters with enemy submarines. HMCS CHIPPAWA recruited him and following the war he served there as Reserve Officer. This past Remembrance Day, HMCS CHIPPAWA honoured Dad for his service.

Dad and Mom settled in Charleswood where he served the community as hockey coach, Cub leader and builder of the Charleswood United Church. After managing his own concrete construction company and hardware store he became a manufacturer's agent and travelled extensively throughout the prairies.

Our family was truly fortunate as Dad's father built a cottage at Victoria Beach in 1919. The entire family has spent wonderful times there. His Winnie the Pooh characters were a joy for all children passing the cottage.

The family would like to thank the staff of both home care and the Portsmouth Retirement Living Residence for all the help given Dad over the past five years.

Finally, thanks to the Minister and congregation of the Charleswood United Church.
