NICHOLSON, Eric Wallace - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Eric Nicholson on December 24, 2021 at the Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay with his family by his side.

Eric was born in 1935 in Glace Bay to the late James Nicholson and Anna (Matthews) Nicholson. He married the love of his life, Nina (McDonald), in 1959 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Eric graduated from St. FX University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Education and then furthered his education studies in the years following. He developed a love for the water during his four years with the Navy sailing throughout North America. He was the principal of MacDonald High School in Dominion for the last 29 years of his teaching career. Eric was an active community member and served as a Board Member of St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Community Hospital, and the Modern Co-op. He supported numerous political campaigns and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Eric was a man of strong faith, a devout Catholic who enjoyed volunteering his services as a reader and eucharistic minister at St. Anne’s Parish as well spending time praying the rosary with patients at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home.

Eric can best be described as a family man who was patient, caring, and loving with a witty sense of humour. He was the father of eight children, Elana (Greg), Sonya (Blaine – deceased), Debbie (Lloyd), Jim (Andrea), Joe (Glenna), Anna-Marie (Shayne), Bill (Mary Lee) and David (Kellie). He enjoyed his summers and most of his retirement at Catalone Lake.

Eric loved woodworking, landscaping and working in his many gardens – most often with his beloved pets by his side. He loved boating on Catalone Lake, spending time with his country neighbors and fishing in Mira Bay with his good buddy, Archie, on his aptly named vessel – the Nina.

Eric was loved by his grandchildren, Andrew (Renelle), Dale (Candace), Lindsey (Josh), Connor, Ellen, Leah (Anton), Nina, Hunter, Eric, David, Julie, Jeff, Bradley, Allie, Dorothy, Chad and Sarah. He was blessed with several great grandchildren, Evelyn, Ben, Sam, Max, Parker and twins Roman and Luca. He also leaves behind his brother Donnie and his sisters, Lynn and Georgina.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Marjorie, Joey, Kenny, Timmie, Rannie and Butchie.

Cremation has taken place under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Glace Bay and services will be announced at a later date.
