O'QUINN, Alfred Augustine (Gus) (né AUCOIN) - Dad was born in St. George's, Newfoundland to William and Olive Aucoin.

He was brought up in South Branch, Newfoundland, with three sisters, Eunice, Vera and Beatrice and brothers, Gerald, Ted, Bill, Albert and Richard.

Early life was living and working on the farm. During this time he found the love of fishing, especially for salmon. He learned to guide from his father who also guided and ran a camp for salmon fishermen on the North branch of the Codroy river. There was never a pool on that river where he left at the end of the day without a fish one way or the other. At 13 years of age he quit school and went to work in the lumber camp with his father at Seven Mile. In 1950 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy where his surname was changed to O’Quinn by the local priest who signed his birth certificate. During his time in the navy he made two world tours visiting many countries and ports around the world. In 1954 he married Mom (Marjorie Lantz) who he met while stationed in Halifax. They had two sons, Alfred William Francis and Daniel Franklin Robert. Dad retired in 1960 to be home with his family and we moved to Mahone Bay area. Dad never lost his love for fishing and hunting and instilled this in his sons. Many a weekend were spent in a tent with Mom and Dad, friends and relatives, on a lake shore or an island beach in Mahone Bay. For the last ten years of his life he had the pleasure of fishing and hunting from the family cabin on the Upper Brook pool on the Codroy river. These trips were shared with his sons, three living brothers and eight nephews. In 2020 Dad again became a guide in Nova Scotia and in Newfoundland where he loved guiding his sons and nephews. He had the distinction of being the oldest working guide for the Nova Scotia Guides Service. (Mahone Funeral Home)
