Died: 13 Apr 2022, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

SLADE, Malcolm Cyril - Age 87, of Fairview, passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on April 13, 2022 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in St. Anthony, N.L., on April 10, 1935 to John and Laura Slade (Ball). He went fishing with his father in his teens, joined the Navy, and received his training in Cornwallis. Later he received an honourable discharge. He stayed in Fairview, where he met his wife Kitty Boutilier at a Fairview Legion dance and they were married in 1957. They had two children, Harold "Butch" Slade and Laura "Susan" Slade. Butch married and had two daughters, Laura and Heather. Cyril had a very special love for his granddaughters. He worked for Hamilton Biscuits, and was a property Assessor for Dartmouth when he retired. He then joined the Commissionaires and worked on the bridges. Cyril could fix or build anything. He built a lot of the furniture in their home. He joined Fairview Legion Branch 142 in 1957, and was a Life member with 65 years service, served on the Executive, was Hall and Bingo chairman, and worked on the Poppy campaign and the turkey shoot. Cyril played darts and pool, but his passion was crib. In 2015 his team went to Alberta and they took First Place and he took First Place in the singles. He loved to go home to St. Anthony and go fishing and hunting with his brothers. Cyril is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine "Kitty" (Boutilier); son, Butch (Sherry Filmore) Slade, Kentville; daughter, Susan Slade, Halifax; granddaughters, Laura Slade (Ben King), Halifax; Heather Slade (Megan Muise), Halifax; special friend, Pam Murphy, Halifax; brothers-in-law, Murray (Ann) Boutilier, Halifax; Ron (Susan) Boutilier, Lower Sackville; nephews, Paul Boutilier, Lower Sackville; Stephen (Terri) Boutilier and family, Lower Sackville; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Maude (Jim) Delaney, St. John's, N.L.; Jessie (Bruce) Rye, British Columbia; Joyce Cull, St. Anthony; Phyllis (Neil) Ireland, St. Anthony; sister-in-law, Mary Slade, St. Anthony; brothers, Frank Slade, St. Anthony; Norm (Dorothy), St. John's. He was predeceased by sister, Marg (Bob) Rickets (of Gardner, Maine); brothers, Raymond Slade (St. Anthony); Eric (Ellen) Slade (Gambo, N.L.); Glen Slade (St. Anthony); brother-in-law, Ron Cull (St. Anthony); and sister-in-law, Clair Slade (St. Anthony). Cyril will be missed by all his friends and family. Cremation has taken place. Donations in his memory may be made to Fairview Legion Veterans Poppy Fund. There will be a Celebration of Life service held in Fairview Legion Branch 142 on April 30th, with a Legion Service at 2 p.m. (Saltwire Network 20 Apr 2022)
