Born: 13 Jan 1925, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Died: 06 Jul 2022, Winnipeg, Manitoba

GREENBERG, Allan (Al) - Allan (Al) Greenberg passed away peacefully on the afternoon of July 6, 2022, at the age of 97, at Concordia Hospital in his home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He experienced numerous medical conditions in recent months and demonstrated his courage and love for life as he battled these conditions like a true champ. He always had a smile on his face and kind words for those who came to visit and care for him.

Al was born on January 13, 1925, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Jack and Sally Greenberg. After completing high school at St. Johns, Al Joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he fought for his country during the Second World War.

After completing his service Al was an international boxing promotor, and successful businessman. In 1973, he married Noreen Smith and together they raised one son, Ian. Al and Noreen enjoyed travelling, and had many memorable vacations to Hawaii, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and Mexico. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved them all. He was at a Jets game as recently as this March. Playing sports in his younger years helped hone the man he became, fiercely competitive on the field and a true gentleman with a heart of gold off the field.

He enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports and was a fixture at these games for almost 40 years. The grandkids were always met after each game with encouraging words, helpful feedback and of course a chocolate bar or Powerade.

Al was preceded in death by his father Jack, mother Sally, and brother Morton. He is survived by his wife Noreen, son and daughter-in-law, Ian, and Teresa, grandchildren, Bryan (Robyn), Tyson (Jasmine), John (Kendra), nieces, Harriet (Hamid), Pam (George), and nephew Jack (Hanneke) Greenberg. Also, the loves of his life, his seven great-grandchildren, Logan, Taylor, Sophia, Blake, Xavier, Arabella, and Maverick.

Thanks to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff at Concordia Hospital for their care given so graciously to our Al during the past five weeks.

Honouring Allan's wishes, there will be no public service. (The Winnipeg Free Press 09 Jul 2022)
