Died: 04 Oct 2022, Thunder Bay, Ontario

 

TAKALO, Ernest Adrian - age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 04, 2022 at Pioneer Ridge, Thunder Bay. Ernie was born on September 13, 1924 in Port Arthur and educated in local schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted at HMCS GRIFFON. He proudly served and survived the sinking of the HMCS ATHABASKAN off the coast of France in 1944. After discharge from the navy, Ernie became a carpenter.

 

In 1946, he married the love of his life, Margaret Sitch. Ernie built many homes and did numerous home renovations during his lifetime. After retirement, Ernie and Margaret enjoyed several trips and ATHABASKAN survivor reunions throughout Canada and the U.S. They enjoyed wintering in Texas for many years. Ernie was proud to have made visits to France to honour his lost shipmates. He continued to travel after he lost Margaret, most notably an around the world cruise.

 

Ernie had been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Arthur Branch 5, the Thunder Bay Naval Association and a member of the Friends of the HMCS HAIDA. He enjoyed many years living in the home he built with Margaret at Surprise Lake.

 

Ernie is survived by his son Ron (Deb), daughter Lynda (Richard), grandchildren Lori (Darcy), Suzy (John), Rob (Flora) and Kevin (Robin). Step-grandchildren Michelle (John) and Michael (Christina). Great-grandchildren Christine (Ben), Robin (Brandon), Riley (Teagan), Isabella, Declan, Luca, Kellan, Lucas, Hunter, Quinn, Barrett and great-great-grandsons Grayson and Koen. Also survived by special nephew David (Sharon) as well as other relatives in Canada and Finland.

 

Ernie was predeceased by his wife Margaret, his parents, brothers Allan, Sven and sister Signe. In keeping with Ernie's wishes, cremation has taken place and interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations to their charity of choice. A special thank you to all the staff at Pioneer Ridge who provided outstanding care and comfort to dad over the last two years. (The Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal 08 Oct 2022)
