A son of Reginald Francis and Emily Jane (née Parker) Thomas of Toronto, Ontario.
Walter's brother, Ordinary Signalman Percy Thomas, died during the Second World War when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, was torpedoed and sunk. Walter was 22 years of age when his brother died in 1942.
