Joseph Neal Nevitt

NEVITT, Joseph Neal - It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph Nevitt (Joe) announce his passing on March 7, 2023 at the age of 87.

 

Joe was born in Ontario in 1935 and found his way to Nova Scotia when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954. He met the love of his life, Betty Lambert in Halifax and they were married on June 1, 1956. Together they raised six children and enjoyed 66 years of marriage, mostly in Dartmouth.

 

Joe worked as a medical assistant for most of his naval career serving on numerous ships out of Halifax. He and his family also enjoyed shorter postings in Cornwallis NS, Hamilton ON and Denver Colorado. In 1973 he served on a Canadian Mission in Vietnam to monitor enforcement of the Paris Peace Agreement. In 1982 Joe retired from his 28 year military career as a Petty Officer 1st Class. Joe continued to work for a several years on an offshore oil rig and a few summers as a camp caretaker.

 

In 1991 Joe retired again & he and Betty spent their winters in Clearwater Florida for the next 24 years. They enjoyed the warm climate and both participated in running and shuffleboard events throughout their time in Florida.

 

Joe is survived by his wife, Betty, three sons, Bruce (Madonna), Ken, Dave (Terry), three daughters, Susan Nevitt-Yelle (Jean Denis), Sandra Comeau (Mike), Karen Marlin (Tim), seven grandchildren, Erin Summers (Matthew), Ryan Nevitt, Craig Nevitt (Vicki), Eric Nevitt (Lesley), Andre Yelle (Lindsay), Katie Yelle (Alistair), Mellissa Yelle, Lauren Marlin, Sarah Marlin and two great grandchildren, Andrew Summers and Elouise MacDonald.

 

On behalf of Joe, his family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff of Oakwood Terrace for the care and compassion they have shown and continue to show to the love of his life, Betty. He spoke daily of the appreciation he had for all the staff at Oakwood Terrace.

 

Cremation has taken place and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
