RADLEY, John Ernest - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, John Radley. Dad passed away at Hospice with his children at his bedside. John was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Olive, and by three sisters, and one brother. He is survived by his brother George and wife Gwen, in Winnipeg; and several nieces and nephews. John is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Karen (Dick), Kathy (John), Brenda (Andrew) and his son Alan (Cheryl). He will also be greatly missed by his 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who were the light of his life. Dad was born and grew up in Winnipeg. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940 and served for 15 years during which time he fought in WW II and the Korean War. In 1942 he met and married Victoria girl, Olive Mann, and they went on to set up home in Esquimalt and raise their family. Dad always had a big commitment to service over the years, which reflected in his active memberships in The Chief and Petty Officer's, The Korean War Veterans, The Army Navy Air Force Veterans and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Associations. He was especially active in The Royal Canadian Legion for over 71 years, during which time he received the Meritorious Service Medal. Dad had many interesting jobs over the years, culminating in his 12 years as a Dispatcher with the Esquimalt Police/Fire Department. The shift work allowed him to pursue his passion of golfing at The Royal Colwood Golf Course where he was a long time member. During these years and into his retirement, Mum and he were able to travel extensively down south and often to Hawaii with good friends. We are proud to mention that he was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to the Community. Many will remember Dad for his ability to tell a story ... especially the grandchildren; and for his generosity and keen sense of humour ... even under trying times. Surely he has helped us through this, his final journey. We will always love you Dad for this, and so much more. A Celebration of Life will be held for John on February 20 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Esquimalt, at 622 Admirals Road, in the upper lounge at 1pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Victoria Hospice Society, or a charity of your choice. (The Victoria Times Colonist 12 Feb 2016)
