SWEETMAN, Walter Charles (Wally), Major, C.A.F., killed 28 Apr 1994, 443 Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron / CFB SHEARWATER - Son of Donald Charles and Shirley Irene Sweetman of Peterborough, Ontario.

 

At the start of a cross-country transit, Sea King 12425 had an engine malfunction near Saint John New Brunswick, followed by an explosion and fire. Engulfed in smoke, the two pilots managed a survivable landing that saved two crew members. But the two pilots, Major Walter ('Wally') Charles SWEETMAN and Major Robert ('Bob') Raymond HENDERSON, died in the accident.

 

Awards and Decorations: Canadian Forces Decoration, Meritorious Service Medal, Special Service Medal with NATO Bar.
