RIDLEY, Arthur Walter - It is with great sadness that the family of Arthur Walter Ridley announce his passing at Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon, MB on June 14, 2023. Art passed peacefully at the age of 96 after living a full life. Art was born on October 29, 1926 to Anne Elizabeth George and William Edward Ridley in Wadena, SK. He grew up in Elfros, SK, attending a single room schoolhouse and working on the family farm. After his schooling, Art moved to British Columbia to work in the shipyards. From there, Art enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy, taking his older brother, Herbie's, place. Art served in a cruise ship in the boiler room during a goodwill tour through South America, and his ship was in route toward Europe when World War II ended. After his career in the military, Art met Laura Eckhart in Winnipeg, MB. Art and Laura married on August 28, 1948 and had one son, Gary Ridley, on June 29, 1951. Art and family moved to Thompson, MB in 1968, where Art managed a woodworking shop supplying refinery boxes, ladders, and other equipment to INCO, the mine company operating out of Thompson. After building two houses in Thompson, he retired early and left for Springside, SK with Laura in 1979, where he remained until 2016. Art's passion for woodworking reached beyond his profession of a carpenter. He continued construction in his retirement, and his hobby of various woodworking projects grew. His granddaughters, Robyn and Holly, spent many afternoons over a scroll saw and hammering their own small projects. Art's days were filled with hunting, golfing, curling, playing pool, fishing, and some gardening. His family and friends will fondly remember his laugh and his readiness to help others. Art was predeceased by his parents, Ann George and William Ridley, his wife, Laura Ridley (nee Eckhart), brothers Herbie Ridley and Cecil Ridley, and sister Violet Kuffner (nee Ridley). He is survived by his son, Gary Ridley (Evelyn), his granddaughters Holly Ridley and Robyn Foley (Dennis), his great grandson, Jordan Foley, and a few relatives. A graveside service was held at Springside Town Cemetery on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 1:00 pm with interment following. A time of fellowship and refreshment was held at the Springside Town Hall.
