He did not stay in the military (RCN) for a long time and may have been on the three-year plan. At some point he was working on vessels off the coast of Newfoundland. He died in the sinking of the Schooner Delroy.

Nine people died, including 3 children. On April 11, 2013, 41 years after the tragedy, Loyola Pomroy, who survived the sinking, and Ray Berkshire, captain of the “Bertha Joyce”, were presented with the Canadian Red Cross’s Rescuer Award, for their help in saving 6 lives that night.
