KATHRENS, Harold Arthur - It is with great sadness that we announce Harold's passing at the Chinook Hospice on Thursday, September 8, 2005 at the age of 82. Harold served with the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Port Arthur as a sonar operator while on convoy and mine-sweeping duty in the North Atlantic and English Channel during World War II. He later served with the Royal Canadian Air Force for fifteen years, as well as logging some time with Canada Post, working on Alberta's oil rigs and at Jack Carter's Auto Dealership, and a number of years as a restaurant operator (with wife Evelyn) in Courtenay, BC. Harold comes from and has fathered a large family. Predeceased by son Steven (Diane); brothers, Stan (Betty) and Vic (Louise); sisters, Betty (Bill) and Marge (Roy). Harold is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Evelyn; sons, Martin (Deborah), Kelly (Kathy), Randy (Theresa), Harley (Denise), Rick (Pauline) and Rob (Debra); sister Audrey (Al); sixteen grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Harold will be remembered as a gentle man of few words, and a man who was always there for his family. He used to say he would live to one hundred, and in our hearts, he will. We would like to thank Harold's many Caregivers for their compassion, patience and good humor. Private Interment at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be accepted, with thanks, by the Chinook Hospice, 1261 Glenmore Trail S.W., Calgary, T2V 4Y8. Leyden's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Harold's brother Stan Katherns served in the RCNVR and RCN(R).
