MUMFORD, Leonard Kempster ERA 4c, V42353, RCNVR MPK - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN - Son of Reverend William John Mumford and Mabel Mumford, of Hagersville, Ontario.
Leonard Mumford was the younger son of Reverend Dr. W. J. Mumford of the Methodist and United Churches of Canada. Leonard was born in Little Current, Leonard was raised to share in the family life of Christian service. He was educated in Toronto, and worked in a machine-shop after leaving school, and later in an aircraft plant. Leonard joined the R.C.N.V.R. in 1942, he took an Engine-Room Artificer's course and passed with high marks as an ERA, Grade 4. He joined Athabaskan early in 1943 and stayed with her throughout her whole career. He celebrated his 25th birthday just before Athabaskan sailed on her last patrol. Engine-room Artificer Leonard Mumford, a young man whose home was in Hagersville, Ont. Lieut. Donald Mumford, whose wife and child are residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reesor, Lindsay, is a brother of the young seaman. Since the sinking of the Athabaskan, Mrs. Mumford of Lindsay has received a letter written by Artificer Mumford on April 27. The Athabaskan went down on April 29.
