They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
ROBERTS, Raymond Leslie, AB, V10880, RCNVR, killed - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN - Son of Thomas James and Myrtle Roberts of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
AB Roberts died when his ship, HMCS ATHABASKAN, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 29 Apr 1944. His body was recovered and he was buried in the Plouescat Communal Cemetery, Finistere, France. The province of Saskatchewan honoured Able Seaman Roberts by naming Roberts Lake in his honour.
MISSING: AB Raymond L. Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Roberts, 436 Fairford street west, Moose Jaw, has been reported missing in the sinking of the Athabaskan. He was born in Moose Jaw and went to school there. On Dec. 1, 1941, he enlisted in the navy and has been on active service since October, 1942. A twin brother, Kenneth; a brother, Orville, and step-brother, Percy, are all in the army. A sister, Grace, is at home in Moose Jaw. (The Regina Leader-Post 08 May 1944)
