George Richard Benham

Born: 19 Sep 1921, Lockeport, Nova Scotia

 

Died: 01 Apr 2009, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

BENHAM, George Richard - Passed away in Halifax, N.S. on 01 April 2009. Born in Lockeport, N.S he was the son of George Benham & Harriet Laing Benham. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 and served until 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer. After the surrender of U-190 he became a Submariner and served on her while under RCN control.

 

He was survived by his wife Shirley & brother Earl.

 

He worked for the White Motor Company for many years and then formed his own company, Benco Marine Sales. He also worked briefly for the Canadian Coast Guard out of Newfoundland and later joined the Department of National Defence, Canadian Forces Auxilliary Vessels on the research ship, CFAV Quest, retiring after 16 years of service. He was a past member of the Armdale Yacht Club, Mayflower Curling Club and Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 25.

 

He is buried in the Lockeport Cemetery, Lydgate, Shelburne County, N.S. Canada.
