BUCHANAN, George Wood, AB A/SD, V39770, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of John and Elizabeth Buchanan, of Toronto, Ontario.
AB Buchanan died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
Able Seaman George Wood Buchanan, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Buchanan, Greenwood Ave., listed missing, enlisted in June, 1942. He trained on the west coast and in Halifax. In 1943, he was transferred to the Alberni and served in the Bermuda and Ecuador areas. A.B. Buchanan played hockey and soccer for East Riverdale, attended Duke of Connaught and Roden schools, and was prominent in the activities of St. Stephen's church. His brother, Gnr. Andrew Buchanan is now in France with the R.C.E. Another brother, Jack, is navigator in the R.C.A.F. in England. (Transcription from a newspaper article)
