LAING, Wallace Waddell, OS Radar III, V66845, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of John A. and Mary M. Laing, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
OS Laing died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
Ordinary Seaman Wallace Waddell Laing who was reported missing on August 21, while serving on H.M.C.S. Alberni, is now been presumed dead, according to word received by his parents Mr. & Mrs. John A. and Mary M. Laing, Winnipeg, Manitoba. OS W. W. Laing enlisted with R.C.N.V.R. in July 1943, trained at Winnipeg, Vancouver Island, Cornwallis and St. Hyacinthe. Born in Winnipeg and attended General Wolfe and Gordon Bell Schools and was active in sports. Prior to enlistment he was employed by the Canada Car at Fort William, and was active in scouting and Y.M.C.A. activities.
