WALKER, James, AB, V17999, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of James and Agnes Walker, Lakeside, Ontario.
AB Walker died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
James Walker was born in St. Marys on 12 Feb 1924 and raised in Blanshard Township where he was educated at Rannoch. After leaving school, he worked initially for Maxwell's and then at Coronation Dairy, James Street South, St. Marys. In his spare time, he paraded with the 2nd (Reserve) Battalion of the Perth Regiment. He volunteered for the RCNVR on 03 Mar 1942 and commenced active service 08 Apr1942. Able Seaman Walker was survived by his parents, James and Agnes Walker of lakeside, a brother Archie of Mitchell Road and four sisters, Ina Russell, Nettie Cousins and Mary Gourlay of St. Marys and Lottie of Mitchell.
