They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
CARLTON, Douglas Anson, AB, 3290, RCN, MPK - 25 Jun 1940, HMCS FRASER - Son of Ankrem Anson Carlton and Isabella Carlton, of Bradwell, Saskatchewan.
AB Carlton died when his ship, HMCS FRASER, was in a collision with HMS CALCUTTA 12 miles due west of Pointe de la Coubre light at the Gironde River mouth and sank as a result with the loss of 65 of her crew.
Able Seaman Douglas Anson Carlton was born in Blucher, Saskatchewan on 04 Apr 1919. He was the son of Ankrem Anson Carlton, a veteran of the 96th Battalion, and Isabella (Rosborough) Carlton, who homesteaded just northwest of Blucher, Saskatchewan. Douglas enlisted on October 03, 1938 at Esquimalt, British Columbia with neighbor Harry Kowbel. Both boys went down with the Fraser and there is a memorial plaque in their honour at Knox United church, Bladworth. Douglas' bother Leonard also served in the Navy, while his sister Eileen was with the R.C.A.F.
