KINGSTON, John Gaylord - It is with great sadness we share that John Gaylord Kingston, age 89 of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 25, 2024 surrounded by his family in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Kingston, ON, he was the son of the late Iris and Paul Kingston. Gaylord was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring in 1982 after 30 years of service.

Never one to slow down he then pursued a 15year career as a youth counsellor at Hawthorne House. He was also a charter member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers Association and served as its president for 20 years.

He was honoured when chosen to become a Field Knight by The Order of Saint George. He also received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation. Gaylord was a passionate advocate for our veterans including becoming a member of the Nova Scotia Last Post Fund.

Gaylord was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Kathleen Joyce; his son, John Paul Harvey; his brothers, Tommy, Gerry and sister, June. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle (Donald) Joyce and Yvonne (James) Zohar, daughter-inlaw, Diane Kingston; grandchildren, Patrick, Katie, Alisha, Hannah, Jessica, Jennifer (Dylan), Claire (Ryan), Michael (Sarah); greatgrandchildren, John Jacob, Carson, Daniel, Ethan; and his sister, Diane (John) Kemp.

Gaylord enjoyed cheering for the Montreal Canadiens, even through the tough years, and was a longtime season ticket holder and fan of the Halifax Mooseheads. He spent his summers on the golf course perfecting his swing and his winters in the alley trying to bowl a perfect 300. He loved his Thursday brunches with his best friends and most of all, spending time with his family.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. January 31st in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, followed by a reception. The service will be livestreamed. Private family interment will be in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens where John and Joyce will be reunited. (The Halifax Chronicle-Herald 27 Jan 2024)
