POETS, David (Dave) - passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, January 26, 2024, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Dave was born in Crystal City on July 14, 1940, the oldest child of Charlie and Millie Poets. He was raised in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan before moving to Brandon. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 18 and travelled to many places during his time in service aboard the Antigonish.

He met the love of his love, Phyllis (Moore), in Brandon and they were married on September 29, 1962. They settled into family life and raised their children in Brandon.

Dave drove truck for “7-up” with his good friend Ken McCauley in his early years and had a successful career at Kullberg’s Furniture where he took on the role of Sales Manager. He became the Canadian Fraternal Director for UCT where many people referred to him as “Mr. UCT”. After Dave “retired” he worked for Leons Furniture and KDL Furniture. He loved people and never stopped giving to his community. The last several years he worked many shifts for the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle and talked to everyone he met.

Dave was known for his involvement in UCT, COR Enterprises, curling, baseball and many other events in Brandon including the Snowbirds air show. He was committed to UCT’s Travo Bingo every Monday night and enjoyed the people he volunteered with and those that played the game.

To his family he was husband, Dad, Papa and very loved. Dave’s love language with his family was quality time. He loved to holiday with Phyllis, spend time in the backyard with his kids growing up. He supported Dean in baseball and hockey by coaching or managing his team. When the grandkids came along, they spent time with him day and night, doing the things they enjoyed. Papa loved having them around and the memories they have with him, and Nanny are priceless.

Dave will be lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis; children Debbie (Chuck) Burton, Holly (Marcel) Landry and Dean (Hazel Bergen) Poets; grandchildren Jennifer (Drew) Ellement, Chris Burton, Karlie (Riley) Chumola, Jess (Marty Bayer) Landry; great-grandchildren Henry and George Ellement, Brody and Maisie Chumola, Blake Landry-Bayer and special adopted daughter Valentina (Edes V Eigbiremonlen); sister Doris Moore, brothers Ron Poets of Duncan, BC and Terry Poets and their extended families.

Dave was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Camilla (Millie) Poets, niece Cheryl Mansoff and numerous other family members.

Donations in memory of Dave may be made to COR Enterprises, 364 Park Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7A8 or The Salvation Army, 9 Princess Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 1R8. (The Brandon Sun 17 Feb 2024)
