GOODWIN, Matthew Edward (Matt) - It is with profound sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Matthew “Matt” Goodwin on Sunday, March 16, 2025 in the ICU VG site.
Matt enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in Gagetown in 2007 and served in the Infantry Division until 2013. During this time, he completed an 8-month tour of Afghanistan. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and served until 2019. His many skills included certification as a PADI Dive Master. He was extremely proud and humble of his achievements and the comradeship with the young men he met during his infantry and naval services.
Sadly, Matt leaves behind the two greatest loves of his life, his loving wife of 7 years, Chérisse, and their toddler, Ionna, a.k.a. Sweet Pea. His love for his family was very apparent and Ionna was the apple of her daddy’s eye!
Like most men who embody a rough-tough tattooed exterior, Matt possessed a tender heart. He was welcomed into our family with open arms, loved and respected. He openly shared his struggles with us, and we cherished him profoundly for that. He is already deeply missed.
During his journey on this earth, Matt exhibited bravery in the field and epic courage during his final days. He served his country for 12 years and unequivocally found his Light in his 9 years as a civilian. We will honor your memories forever in our hearts, minds and spirits and remain stronger together. Ionna and Matt shared an unbreakable daughter/daddy bond. We promise, Matt, that Ionna will remember her daddy as an honorable Hero ?
Matt was an avid outdoorsman; you may honor Matt’s memory by planting a tree. Remember Canadian Veterans and honor their sacrifices for our freedom.
A Celebration of Matt’s Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 198 Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook, NS B4R 1B9. (Serenity Funeral Home)
