In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BRADT, Rick - It is with profound sadness that we announce Rick’s passing on April 11, 2025, in Halifax, surrounded by his family and all of their love, after a five-year battle with renal cancer. Born on May 7, 1964, in St. Thomas, Ontario and spent most of his younger years in St. Catharines, Ontario. Rick joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1985 as a naval communicator. He spent the majority of his career on the East Coast where he met and fell in love with his wife of 33 years, Cathy. The life that they built together was his proudest accomplishment and the love that he had for his family ran deeply. Rick was an avid fisherman, taking every opportunity possible to drop a line. He was so pleased to have had the opportunity to go fishing with his brothers, one last time, on a recent trip to Ontario. He had a great sense of humour and he would be very proud to know that his “dad jokes” will live on forever through his son, whom he taught by example how to be a great man. He had a love of hockey, never giving up on his beloved Leafs (maybe this will be the year). There are no words to say how much he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rick was predeceased by his father Robert, and his mother Jean (Vickery). He is survived by his wife Cathy., his children, Ashleigh (Scott) of Merritt, BC; Emily of Truro, NS; Cameron (Mandi) Of Ottawa, ON; and Taylor (Matt) of Halifax, NS. Grandchildren, Alexis Dawson, Rae-Lynn Dawson and Jameson Dawson, all of Merritt BC. Brothers Brian (Gislaine), niece Kaylin (Matt) and great nephew Jackson of Ottawa, ON, David (Brian) of Victoria BC, and sister Tammy (Terry) Hot Springs, AR. He also leaves behind his father and mother in-law, Jack and Geri Helmkay, of Dartmouth NS, brothers in-law John (Wendy) of Dartmouth NS, Shawn (Lucy) of Sackville, NS, and Rob (Jeanette) of Dartmouth, NS. Nephews Matthew (Ashley) and Michael (Nicole). Also, very special great nieces Katie, Charlee and Alexis, and great nephew Jaxson, all of Dartmouth. Lastly, his cat Izzy, whose antics provided much needed levity.
A celebration of life will follow at later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rick may be made to the QEII Foundation (cancer care) or the Canadian Cancer society. A special thanks to Dr. Lori Wood and nurse Donna for their exceptional care and compassion.
Rick never missed an opportunity to give his loved ones a hug and tell them how much he loved them. He would tell you to do the same. (Arbor Memorial)
