Jules Joseph Rene Verhaeghe, C.D.

Petty Officer 1st Class Clearance Diver, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Died: 08 Apr 2025

VERHAEGHE, Jules Joseph Rene - age 82 of Elmsdale. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather at his home on April 8th, 2025, in his sleep. Born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba, he was a son of the late Joseph and Blanche (Harmer) Verhaeghe and stepmother, Martha Verhaeghe. Jules served his country proudly in the Canadian Navy for 30 years in two of the more dangerous professions - Diving and Explosives Ordnance Disposal. Jules retired from the navy in 1993 having reached the rank of Petty Officer First Class. After his retirement from the navy, he continued to work for Conners Diving until his second retirement in 2022. Jules dedicated his time to the community in various capacities but took great pride in his leadership in Scouts Canada as the leader of the 2nd Grand Lake Scout Troop in the 1980's. He spoke highly of the young men he coached and told stories of the troops' exploits often with pride and admiration. In retirement, Jules was an active member of the West Gore Worthy Wiseman Club and Nova Scotia Antique Engine and Tractor Association. Jules was naturally gifted mechanically and often helped others with repairing almost anything. His abilities were respected and appreciated by many for his aptitude to fix, repair, build or fabricate anything made of metal or wood. Jules and his wife, Lorraine, travelled often during their retirement exploring many small communities in Atlantic Canada. They also loved the value of home life with Lorraine in her garden and Jules in the garage. Together, they raised three sons working together to instill a strong work ethic, respect for others and to value family and friends. Jules and Lorraine offered the same guidance later in life to their grandchildren. Jules is survived by the love of his life, his wife of over 60 years, Lorraine (nee King); sons, Pernell (Sue Ellen), Vincent (Cheryl), Joseph (Nancy Appleby); grandchildren, Parker (Michaela), Victoria Verhaeghe, Juliet Verhaeghe, Michael Verhaeghe; brothers, Eugene and Verne; sister, Winnie Koltusky. Besides his parents, Jules was predeceased by his brothers, Victor and Harry and sisters, Dorothy Pellerin and Alberta Weinrauch. Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. No service by request. In lieu of flowers donations in Jules' memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. (The Halifax Chronicle Herald 15 Apr 2025)
