In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
JUKES, Olwen Beatrice (née Griffiths) - Passed away peacefully on Monday, 26 October 2009 after a long illness. Much loved wife of the late Andrew "Budge" Jukes; beloved mother of Andrew (Kathy) and Jane; devoted grandmother to Mark (Amanda), Jeffrey and Andrea and great-grandmother to Jackson. Lovingly remembered by cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends around the world. Born in Cardiff, Wales in 1922, Olwen as a young child, with her parents, emigrated to Canada. Raised in Berwick, Nova Scotia, she graduated from Edgehill and went on to serve in the Canadian Navy as a Lieutenant in the Wrens stationed in Halifax, Newfoundland and Ottawa from 1942 to 1945. After her marriage in Ottawa in 1945 she moved to Vancouver. Despite a busy life in Vancouver and bringing up two children, Olwen always found time for others and for many years worked tirelessly as a volunteer for charitable organisations, Save the Children Fund and the Vancouver General Hospital to name but two. An enthusiastic golfer, keen gardener but most importantly a gracious, amusing, fun-loving hostess, Olwen will be fondly remembered for her most generous hospitality, kindness and warm welcome to family, friends and visitors alike. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff and carers at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville for their devotion and dedication to caring for Olwen during her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Olwen's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C. or a charity of one's choice. A private family service to be held at a later date. (The Vancouver Sun and/or The Province 31 Oct 2009)
Olwen's father, Captain George Griffiths served in the Royal Navy during the First World War and the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War.
Olwen's husband, Lt Andrew Jukes served in the RCNVR during the Second World War.
