SCHROEDER, Garry Conrad - Dr. Garry Schroeder - Garry was born on November 15, 1954 and passed away on December 28, 2014. Garry lived an interesting life. At the age of 18, he joined the Canadian Navy and travelled the world while working in submarines. He then left the navy after five years and pursued his life long dream of becoming a medical doctor. Upon graduation from the University of Manitoba Medical School, Garry worked as a General Practitioner in Snow Lake, Manitoba where he developed close friendships - including the Kirk Coates family. He enjoyed his work in Snow Lake that also included providing services to the local pets as there was no veterinarian in Snow Lake. There were also times when Garry went deep into the mines to provide medical care to the injured. Once Garry's term position at Snow Lake came to an end, he was able to work briefly as a Medical Officer with CUSO. This work provided Garry with an opportunity to work in a remote village north of Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea. Garry then returned to Canada and eventually entered a residency program in Radiation Oncology. This launched him into a successful career with CancerCare Manitoba. Garry was a pioneer in the use of Gamma Knife technology for the treatment of cancerous tumors. He also ran the Brain Tumor Clinic at CancerCare Manitoba. Garry was always very hard working and put his patient's care first. He often spoke about his responsibility to his patients and their families. Garry very much enjoyed his Sunday morning breakfasts in Headingly at Nick's Inn. This is where he spent time with his brother Paul along with friends, Sean McCreary and Norm Daly. Garry was good to the staff at Nick's Inn and they too were good to him. Garry is survived by his mother, Marion Schroeder, brother Chris Schroeder (Joanne), sister Carolyn McFerran (John), brother Paul Schroeder (Cathy), his wife of 20 years, Nina Schroeder, nephews Eric Schroeder, Joe Schroeder, as well as cousins in Winnipeg and Toronto. A private family service was held on January 9, 2015. On January 14, 2015, the kind staff of CancerCare Manitoba held memorial service in honour of Garry. Our family has suffered a huge loss with Garry's passing. We are proud of his accomplishments and will always miss him. (Winnipeg Free Press 04 Apr 2015)
