James was born in Erieau, Ontario, the son of Norman Cox, also of Erieau, Ontario. He joined the in 1944 serving as a Stoker. In November 1944, James returned home on leave, seeing his 5-month old daughter for the first time. After the war he sailed the Great Lakes on freights for 25 years as a Marine Engineer. James died from kidney failure after living his final five years at Parkwood Hospital in London, Ontario. He was a member of the Blenheim Legion Branch 185 for Sixty-two years.
