In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PIKE, Douglas John (Doug) - 78, Truro, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, September 29, 2025, at Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in St. John’s, NL, he was a son of the late Roddy and Alreta (Blackwood) Pike. After living in many locations in NS, NB and NL during his childhood, he joined the RCAF on November 4, 1964.
During his 21 years in the Canadian Forces, he was posted to the following locations: St. Jean’s (PQ), Clinton (ON), Pagwa (ON), Ottawa (ON), Summerside (PE), Shearwater, Shelburne, Halifax, Gagetown (NB), Winnipeg (MN) and HMCS Huron; he also served two tours with the United Nations in Cyprus.
Doug retired from RCAF in 1985 at CFB Barrington. He was then employed as a Federal Public Servant for the following 23 years and for the last 15 years was Union of National Defense (UNDE) Vice President (National Officer) for Nova Scotia.
Doug is survived by his wife and soulmate, Mona Smith-Pike (Cook), Truro; daughter, Katherine Pike; Mona’s children, Margo (Kevin) Archibald, Mattatall Lake; Michael (Tasha), Krestova, British Columbia; grandchildren, Nicholas (Rebecca) Archibald, Noah Archibald, Abigail Archibald, Samson Smith; great grandchildren, Lane and Lilah; brother-in-law, Scott (Linda) Cook; sisters-in-law, Jo-Ann (John) MacDonald, Stephanie Cook, Doris Cassidy.
Along with his parents, Doug was predeceased by his son, Douglas Jr.; sisters, Hazel, Irene; brothers, Robert, Laurie, David; sister-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) Todd; brothers-in-law, Kenn Crosby, Robin Cook, Bill Todd. He was the last surviving member of his siblings.
Doug was a member of First United Church, Truro, member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro and a long serving member of Board of Colchester North Liberal Association. His past hobbies included gardening and re-organizing his garage. He was an avid reader, news watcher, lover of old time country music, die-hard fan of NASCAR, fan of Winnipeg Jets hockey team and also enjoyed the local Jr. "A" Bearcats.
He especially enjoyed travelling, attending conferences as a National Officer with the UNDE organization in Victoria, Calgary, Niagara Falls, Chicoutimi, Montreal and Halifax. On a personal level, he spent parts of several winters in Florida cruises to Alaska, Caribbean and Panama Canal, crossed Canada twice on Via Rail and enjoyed every mile on each and every trip.
A very special thank you is extended to the entire staff at Cedarstone Enhanced Care, especially Betty, who made his stay with them a home, and many thanks to friends and family who took him biscuits and jam.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Doug’s family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, October 2, 2025, and funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2025, Reverend Cathy Crooks officiating. Reception will follow. Interment in Watson Cemetery, 1997 East Prince Street, Salmon River. If so desired, donations in Doug’s memory to First United Church, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro (Poppy Fund) or charity of choice are welcomed. (Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home)
