They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
JONES, Ackland Hubert, OS, 3421, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Hubert Jones, and of Margaret Jones, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Ordinary Seaman Jones Huot died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Ordinary Seaman Ackland Hubert Jones, age 18 saw action throughout the Dunkirk evacuation and escaped death in the sinking of HMCS Fraser. He was killed when HMCS Margaree was lost due to a collision with another ship. He was born in South Wales and came to Vancouver as a lad of eight years old. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Margaret Jones, 5023 Cypress Street. Ordinary Seaman Ackland Jones attended Magee High School and joined the Canadian Navy at Esquimalt in 1939 as a boy seaman.
