JONES, Alfred Ernest, OS, 3422, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940 - HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Isaac and Lily Jones, of New Westminster, British Columbia.

Ordinary Seaman Jones died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

Ordinary Seaman Alfred Ernest Jones was a hero when the Canadian destroyer HMCS Fraser was sunk last June and four years ago when he rescued three people from drowning in two separate near fatalities at White Rock and Vancouver. Ordinary Seaman Jones, age 17, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac and Lily Jones, of New Westminster, British Columbia. He is believed to have died in the sinking of HMCS Margaree. Young Jones saved hundreds of lives when he defused depth charges on HMCS Fraser that would have exploded had they hit the water. Four years ago he rescued Arthur Oxenham and Lisa Scott from drowning at White Rock and Jean Oxenham from a similar fate at Second Beach.
