In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CARTER, Dorothy Elizabeth (née HAMILTON) - was born in Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) on 2 August 1926. At age 17 she joined the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. Dorothy completed her basic training at HMCS Conestoga, located in the former Grandview School for Girls in Galt, Ontario. After basic training at Conestoga Dorothy moved on to specialist training at HMCS Stadacona in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she served as a messenger until 26 March 1946.
After the war, she worked at a laboratory where she and Gordon Carter met. Gordon was a veteran of the war who was wounded during the Battle of the Hochwald Gap. Dorothy and Gordon lived their first 23 years together in Sioux Lookout, Sault Ste. Marie, Desbarats and Bruce Mines, raising their young family. In 1971 they moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for the adventure of-a-lifetime and the eventual birth of their nine much-loved grandchildren. A legal secretary for many years in Ontario and the Northwest Territories, Dorothy's spare time was spent helping Gordon build and enjoy their camp at Pontoon Lake (NWT), gardening, birding, rock hunting and watching over "her" loons on the lake.
Dorothy and Gordon spent 57 years together, before Gordon passed away in 2005. A loving mother, grandmother and sister, Dorothy is survived by her son Neil (Mary) and daughters Nola, Wendy (Raymond McEwen), Karen Marshall (Wells), Gail Leonardis (Louis), Lisa (Jon Lee) and grandchildren Jacqueline, Naomi, David, Brendan, Luke, Jared, Mark, Troy and Amanda, sisters Iris McGrath (Ron) and June Bond, and nephews and nieces.
With sadness, Dorothy's family announced her passing on October 26, 2011 in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario with her family at her side.
