STEENE, Joseph Jerome (Jerry) - Second World War Veteran - It is with great sadness that the family of Jerry Steene announce his sudden passing on July 16th, 2013 at the age of 89. Jerry was born in Swan Lake MB on April 8, 1924. He moved to Fort William as a teenager and joined the Royal Canadian Navy to serve in WWII as a signalman aboard the HMCS Provider. During his service he married the love of his life, Dorothy (May) Dewar in 1944. He joined the Fort William Police force as a constable in 1946 and retired as a Detective Sargent after 35 years of service in 1981. He was a long serving member of the Legion and was proud to have served as President of Branch 6. He was a member of the Naval Association and Army Navy Air Force Assoc. In his later years he very much enjoyed travelling, especially gambling trips. His family was most important to him and he was very proud of each of them. Jerry is reunited with his precious wife May who predeceased him in 2000 after 56 years of marriage. He was predeceased by 10 of his siblings and numerous other relatives. He is survived by his daughters: Brenda (Karl) Schmidt, Tracey (Ed) Kotyk and Deana (Dr. Bill Weston) Steene; grandchildren Lori (Al) Sdao , Tammy (Mike) Boire and Shannon (Marcel Chalifoux) Schmidt, Bryant (Sheri Leviski) Kotyk, Courtney West and great-grandchildren Devin, Cory, Marek, Taylin, Tyler and Makayla. He is survived by his loving sister Clara Maertens, many nieces and nephews as well as friend Elsie Ritchie. A celebration of life to commemorate Jerry will be held on Tuesday July 23, 2013 at the Royal Canadian Legion Br 5, 229 Van Norman St. beginning at 11:30am. A private family interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the MS Society or TBRHSC Foundation/Cardiac Fund would be appreciated. (The Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal 20 Jul 2013)
