McALISTER, William James, AB, 3389, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Donald McDonald McAlister and Catherine S. McAlister, of Eston, Saskatchewan.

 

Able Seaman McAlister died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Able Seaman William James McAlister was the son of Donald McDonald and Catherine S. McAlister who homesteaded north of Eston, Saskatchewan. William was educated at Prouse School and at Eston, Saskatchewan and was working as a stenographer when he enlisted on April 27, 1939 at Esquimalt, British Columbia.
