FIFOOT, Colin Francis - It is with deep sadness that we, the family, regret to announce the peaceful passing of Colin Francis Fifoot, age 91, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Sydney Mines, Colin was the son of the late John and Viola (Bonnar) Fifoot. In his early years, Colin was an avid hockey and baseball player, a passion that grew into a lifelong devotion to his Toronto teams—the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. Their games were always on the television, except when CNN had his full attention.

As a young man, Colin enlisted in the Navy in preparation for the Korean War, where he trained as a Morse code operator. When the war came to an end, he set off for the Great Lakes, putting his skills to use on the lake boats. Eventually, Cape Breton called him home once again.

After returning home in the 1970s, Colin briefly worked in the local mines. However, his faith led him to an introduction with Sister Catherine Rooney and the Notre Dame Convent. Sister Rooney became like family to him and was even the namesake of his second daughter.

A man of deep faith, Colin’s connection to the Notre Dame Convent inspired him to share his devotion with the Immaculate Conception Congregation, now Holy Family. His faith and commitment to the Catholic religion were held close to his heart, reflected in his regular attendance at Sunday services and his nightly prayers and Bible readings, often with his prayer beads in hand. Colin’s faith never wavered. In his final years, when he could no longer physically attend services, he found comfort in the Mass for Shut-Ins on CTV—even interpreting the numbers that appeared on the screen during these services as messages to guide his weekly Lotto 649 picks.

The bond between Colin and Sister Rooney led to a 22-year endeavour known to many locals as The Mad Potters. Together, they crafted some of the finest ornamental keepsakes and statues representing Cape Breton, its mining heritage, and its rich culture.

During this time, Colin met Debbie Pearo, and it was love at first sight. They shared a deep and genuine connection that endured throughout their lives. Debbie cared for Colin with unwavering devotion, remaining by his side through every battle and difficult moment until his final days.

Colin and Debbie married in 1978, beginning their lifelong journey together and raising a family shortly thereafter. He was a devoted father to Leanne (Justin), Monica (Shawn), John-Mark, and Gerard (Jenna), who will forever miss their father’s guidance, wisdom, and loving presence.

As the family grew, Colin proudly embraced his favourite role—Poppy. A title he wore with immense pride, his grandchildren Emily (Cassius), Madison, Gracie, Brielle, and Brea were his princesses. He was also blessed with the joy of his beautiful great-grandson, Kyrie, with another great-grandchild soon to arrive. Poppy cherished every moment spent with them and delighted in sharing his wisdom and stories of the past—whether they were listening or not.

Colin is also survived by his siblings, John “Buddy” (Shirley) Fifoot and Geraldine (Bryan) Cullen. He was predeceased by Viola Fifoot (in infancy), Theresa Debont, Thelma MacIntyre, Muriel MacKinnon, his beloved cat Tux, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who went above and beyond each day to ensure Colin’s comfort and the comfort of his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the An Cala Unit or the Cape Breton Cancer Society in appreciation of the incredible work they do.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 11, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, February 13, at 2:00 p.m. in Holy Family Parish, Main Street, Sydney Mines. All who knew and loved Colin are welcome to attend.

Those who knew Colin might have found him a quiet man, but those who knew him best will fondly remember his wit, kindness, stories, and the many blessings he brought into their lives. His absence will be deeply felt, and he will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to love him. (J.M. Jobes Funeral Home)
