In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SWAIN, Catherine Elizabeth (née FRANCIS) - It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Catherine Elizabeth Swain on March 9, 2026, at Harborview Hospital DVA Unit. Born In Elmont New York, with the family returning to Westmount N.S. on her fifth birthday. Catherine was the daughter of the late Fred and Edna Francis. She spent her early years in the Royal Canadian Navy joining the Wrens in 1956. She had the distinct honor of being the first female to enlist in the post-war permanent force in Nova Scotia.
Catherine was a strong, determined, independent woman who lived her life based on the principles of faith, family and community. She was known for her beautiful handiwork which included quilting, sewing, needlepoint, and ceramics. Baking was another of Catherines recognized talents. She could invariably be found in her kitchen apron on, creating delicious treats to share with family, friends and neighbors. And her apple pie was always the highlight of special family dinners.
Catherine was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney. Always wishing to stay active and social she was involved in numerous organizations --- church choirs, St. Vincent du Paul Society, Seaview Golf and Curling Club, CWL, Legion and the Pensioners Club.
For many years Catherine's summers were spent seaside camping with Earl in her "Happy Place" Dunvegan. It was at this special place that she made countless memories and life-long friends. She especially enjoyed the beach, sunsets and campfires around which many stories and laughs were shared. She was also a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was always proud of her family's accomplishments.
She is survived by sons Jamie (Roxanne) and Bill (Tina), grandchildren Mayannda (Wade), Jamie Nora (Andrew), Josh (Chelsea), Jake (Danielle) and great-granddaughters Haven and Isla. She is also survived by sister Ellen MacLellan, sister-in-law Jean Gray as well as many special nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Earl, parents Fred and Edna Francis, sisters Margaret, Evelyn and brother Fred. The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude and thanks to the Harborview DVA unit on Catherine's behalf. Your kindness and compassionate care will always be remembered. You truly became her extended family.
