In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PERRIER, Leon Joseph - age 82 years of Atikokan, passed away peacefully with family at his side, at the Atikokan General Hospital on November 24th, 2008. Leon was born in Port Arthur on July 28th, 1926 to Loretta and Leo Perrier. At the age of 19 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served until 1946. After returning home he moved to Atikokan to work at Steep Rock Iron Mines, working his way up from Shovel Operator to Open Pit Mine Superintendent, until it's closing. With all his knowledge and experience in mining, Detour Lake then hired Leon as a Mine Manager, where he stayed until his retirement. Not one to sit back and relax, Leon then worked as Manager of the Atikokan Municipal Airport, until full retirement, where even though he could no longer use his pilot's licence due to health issues, he could still indulge in his passion for planes and flying. Leon loved sharing time with family and friends in outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, hunting trips with "the boys", the family cabin at Calm Lake and carpentry. Leon was united in marriage to his wife of 61 years, Heidi (Hilda) Harrison of Winnipeg in 1947 in Atikokan, where they made their lives raising a family of 4. Leon was a member of St. Patrick's parish and former member of the Knights of Columbus. Leon is survived by his loving wife Heidi, children Wayne (Mellanie) of Quesnell, B.C. , Terry (Wendy) of Shabaqua, Debi (Paul) Rasinaho of Factor Lake (Atikokan) and Marianne Perrier of Atikokan; grandchildren Brooke Rasinaho of Thunder Bay, Nicole Perrier of Kelowna, B.C. , and Bo Steward of Thunder Bay; brothers Ron (Rikka) Perrier of Thunder Bay, Bob, Bruce and sister Georgina (Tony) Gash of Thunder Bay as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special family friends Helen & Gary Cook & family - Charles (Lisa) Cook, Carol (Tyler) Coulson and children. He was predeceased by his parents Loretta and Leo; brothers Peter and Don; sisters Margie, June, Bernadette, Dorothy and twin daughters at birth. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28th at St. Patrick's Church in Atikokan with Father Tito officiating. A private family interment will be held Monday, December 1st in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Thunder Bay at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Atikokan General Hospital would be appreciated.
