MYLREA, Russell Edward, Stoker 2c, 21597, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Philip Douglas and Margaret L. Mylrea, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

 

Stoker Mylrea died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Stoker Russell Edward Mylrea of Rosetown was the son of Phillip Douglas and Margaret L. Mylrea who homesteaded southeast of Battleford, later farmed at Rosetown and finally moved to Swift Current. Russell was born at North Battleford, attended Scott collegiate at Regina and was working as a clerk in a general store when he enlisted on April 24, 1939 at Esquimalt, British Columbia. His brother Douglas served in the Army, Canadian Artillery.

 

Edward's brother, Reginald Mylrea also served in the RCN
