Michael Edward Shannon, O.M.M.

SHANNON, Michael Edward, Dr., M.A., M.Sc., M.D., OMM, Surgeon Commodore (Ret’d), Canadian Armed Forces, former Deputy Surgeon General of Canada, passed away, leaving a legacy of distinguished service in military medicine and public health.

 

Born July 26, 1947, Dr. Shannon dedicated more than three decades to the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in senior leadership roles that helped shape military medical services and the care of Canadian Forces personnel. He later served as Director General of the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, contributing to Canada’s response to infectious disease and the strengthening of its public health systems. His work included involvement in the reorganization of the Canadian blood system and advisory roles with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

 

He also played a key role in the development of Canada’s emergency medical response capabilities and served as a senior medical liaison officer during the Gulf War. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Military Merit in recognition of his exceptional service.

 

He is survived by his daughter Polly Shannon, her children Pasha and Loïc Dyson; his son Micah Shannon; his former wife Mary MacKay-Smith, mother of Polly and Micah; and his former wife Jeanette Arsenault. He is reunited with his daughter, Kait Shannon (Jeanette).

 

Michael was a devoted father and a friend to anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
